At the time of purchase, the Sharper Image was the only one with a permanent filter. This was a big plus for me seeing as the older HEPA cleaners have 2 filters to replace, the larger one being nearly the price of the machine. This Honeywell tower has a permanent filter. There are many claims for and against the Ionic Breeze. I'm still undecided on how effective it is -- but I feel almost the same way about my large HEPA filter. I found myself running both of them to control my allergies. Although I cleaned them regularly and found dust on both, I can't say the air was particularly different. However, shortly after turning this on in the bedroom for the first time, I could smell a difference. I haven't had it long enough to say it's made a real dent in my allergies -- plus the fact that my allergies are intermittant -- but I'm pleased that I even notice it... The only thing I'm slightly worried about is the strange smell... Maybe I'm just used to breathing dirty moldy air **Update** Okay... The strange smell has disappeared after my first day of full use so maybe it has something to do with the purifier being brand new... I highly recommend this product because its very sturdy and the base feels weighted so theres no need to worry about it moving or falling over while it oscillates! I gave my 21 inch box fan to my friend Amanda because this device blows just as much air with hardly any noise at all, its very close to being silent... and the air feels and smells clean which really makes me happy... I mainly purchased this product because I hate vacuming... I really hate vacuming! I'm really hoping this product rids my room of dust and cuts my vacuming down to once a week... So remember... So for those who are allergic to everything, you may be better off with what Honeywell calls a "True Hepa." For me at least, I'm doing well with this model, and I'm relieved that I no longer have to buy 70 dollar filters for my old Honeywell machine. This is my new favorite gadget in my home. I was actually concerned that this would be too quiet, but it turned out to be the perfect amount of 'white noise' to lull me to sleep. Just to put it into perspective, though, this unit is much larger than my old Honeywell air purifier yet much less noisy. I would say that the Honeywell was more vibrational noise, and annoying enough to make it difficult to hear the TV, whereas the Fellowes is barely noticeable but enough to block out distracting noises that keep me from sleeping (like my neighbors in the apartment next door). The air quality in my room has been great since the machine has been running. Pollen has been crazy high lately, but I have not had any problems to speak of. As for cleaning/changing the filter, it is too early for me to comment on this since I haven't had it that long. I will now try very hard to think of something negative (which, there isn't much at all). For some reason, my cat likes to jump... Previous reviewers have very effectively described the ease of set-up for this Air Purifier. It is, indeed, very easy to set-up. I have many dogs, many allergies, and a big, old, dusty house. This is the best air-purifier that I have ever owned. It removes pet dander, fine particles of dust ( especially plaster dust, from those old walls), and, from the appearance of the filers, practically everything else from the air. We have wood stoves in our house, which create many fine, black, soot particles. This machine removes all of those. It is easy to run, offering several speed levels. My eyes used to burn each evening as I sat in a room with one of the stoves burning. Now, it is as if there is no wood stove in the room. My eyes stopped burning and watering, and I stopped coughing each morning ( I don't smoke, but before this filter arrived, I certainly sounded like a smoke, with my early morning"typical" smoker's cough.). The noise it produces is similar to a fan on a low setting, kind of a white noise so to speak. The filters are reasonably priced if you find them on sale-they are currently on sale for 29.99 (reg 39.99) & I replace them every 6 months. The carbon pre filter is much cheaper when bought from your local home improvement store, they sell sheets of carbon that you can cut to fit. I have a cat in my small apartment so I use it to clean the air of cat litter dust and dander... because of the litter dust, I've already had to replace both the pre- and HEPA filter way before their time, but I guess that just means it's working. The pre-filter can can also be vacuumed or shaken out to clear the dust. The noise is minimal, but I'm used to having fans running in my room already... I would definitely recommend the Hunter 30057 as a cheap HEPA purifier. Also note that it takes a while for the initial plastic smell of the parts to fade, several weeks in my case.
